Just under 1800 people packed into Abbey Lawn, Bourne on Saturday to see the hosts triumph in dramatic fashion, 8-7 on penalties over a Boston Town side featuring several former Fenmen, including Luke Wilson, Harry Limb, Layton Maddison, Fraser Bayliss and Liam Adams.
The visitors had taken the lead late in the first half through another of those former players, Jordan Nuttell (43 min) before Brad Marshall levelled for the hosts on 75 minutes. Many supporters across the league would have followed the penalty shootout drama on social media with Bourne finally coming out on top with a second save by ex-Wisbech keeper Dan Swan.
It has to be said, hats off to Boston Town’s X (formerly Twitter) feed which provided detailed updates as the excitement unfolded.
Well-supported Bourne finished the league season in second place but were left frustrated on a Tuesday night back in October when a header from debutant Sam Bennett gave the Fenmen a much-needed victory in front of 171 hardy supporters.
