The Fenmen suffered their first pre-season defeat at Ely this afternoon in a match spoiled by unseasonal high winds.
But it was not all gloom and doom. Wisbech controlled much of the game against their Eastern Counties League opponents, especially in the second half, but created few clear-cut chances and were probably guilty of taking one touch too many.
Wisbech, who were missing several key players, attempted to play one-touch football whereas the home side adopted a more direct approach.
Ely opened the scoring midway through the first half when goalkeeper Charlie Congreve raced out in a failed attempt to clear the ball and Luke Mansfield stroked it into the empty net for probably the easiest goal he will score this season.
Wisbech, starting with a strike force of Harley Murkin and Toby Allen, came closest to scoring when a looping header from Pat Kacirek was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Key.
The visitors were on top for most of the second half and came close to levelling when a stinging effort from Sisa Tuntulwana shaved the post.
But Ely looked dangerous on the break and Congreve made a couple of good saves before the home side added a second goal.
A disappointing result but it’s early days. Two more away games before they start the league programme at Hucknall in two weeks.
Wisbech: Congreve, Tuntulwana, Howard, Kortua, Briggs, Glusko, Kacirek, Murphy, Murkin, Allen, Perkins. Subs: Assombalonga, Sarmaniuk, Wallace, Conyard, Acar.
