The Fenmen’s dream of further FA Cup glory lasted for half an hour at Fountain Fresh Park this afternoon.
Wisbech began strongly against Step 4 opponents and a foul on Amir Ward after 10 minutes led to a penalty which Sam Murphy hit high into the net.
Soon afterwards teenager Matteo Perkins, given his first start, sped down the right and sent in a fierce shot which rattled the post. Such small margins. Another goal and it might have been so different.
But The Waders took over and sliced through the home defence three times in less than 10 minutes to put the visitors in command. The goals came from Marcus Goldbourne, giant striker Harry Draper and JJ lacey,
The second half began with Wisbech on the offensive, a fiercely hit cross from the left failed to find a Wisbech boot and then Archie Wallace struck the bar with a good chance from close in.
Biggleswade, who made a string of high profile signings this summer, went on to score twice more, including a fifth in the closing stages. But 5-1 in no way reflects the match.
Wisbech performed far better than in last week’s dismal display against Ashby. Keenan Hall, a central defender brought in from Wisbech St Mary, did more than enough to justify his inclusion. And goalkeeper Charlie Congreve produced a man-of-the-match performance with a string of excellent saves.
The Fenmen are out of the cup but they can hold their heads high against powerful opponents.
More cup action next Saturday, away at Godmanchester Rovers in the FA Vase.
