Tuesday night saw the Fenmen make the short trip to March Town United for a proper friendly Fen derby. The first half meandered in the early summer evening sunshine with no side really taking control but with the hosts on top of the chances and possession. Town without Amir Ward or Sam Bennett (both unavailable) and Rob Conyard (injured) remained in the game however.
Wisbech, who had showed some nice passages of play in the first half, settled into the game more in the second. With a quarter of an hour remaining and with the faint sweet smell of youthful over-indulgence and poor decisions in the air (a problem not unknown in Wisbech too), Town took the lead. A well-worked move from the right wing lead to confusion in the experienced March defence leaving Helkias Acheampong to tap in from close range. Fast becoming a fan favourite with the Fenmen travelling faithful ‘H’ chalked up his second goal in as many games.
As the game rolled to its conclusion, the Wisbech goal was never really threatened as the buoyant pre-teen drum of the famous Scaffold End finally fell silent. Town fans would have been happy to see two solid performances from both new goalkeepers.
A good turn out from both sides and a good work out for both teams who will be hoping to progress and build from last season. Hats off to the vocal March support and the ‘old skool’ banter from the two centre halves – it certainly adds to the occasion.
