An efficient and workmanlike - just not spectacular - performance saw the Fenmen progress in the Vase against Woodbridge.
Town with some injury woes - most notably Bennett, Miller and Dear - faced some changes to the starting XI. The home support were cheered though to see fan favourite Luke Nicholson return to the bench after suspension.
Town took an early lead after 12 minutes when Conyard struck home in what is fast becoming a Rob Conyard signature move. On 29 minutes Amir Ward left the Woodbridge defence and keeper stranded with a strike from 16 yards that nestled in the net.
Town pushed on to the break but the second half saw an improved showing from Woodbridge. A penalty with 20 minutes to go seemed to let the Woodpeckers back in the game but debutant keeper Arun Khan did enough to distract and the chance sailed wide.
To compound the visitors' woes a strike by Harris on 72 minutes struck a prone Conyard and left the keeper stranded to make it 3-0. The visitors did rally though and the ever dangerous Beamish beat the town defence and struck past Khan on 74 minutes after a corner routine at the other end had gone awry.
Town progress but a note on our visitors. If any fans understand your current plight, it's Wisbech. Things will get better for a club well supported with fans and players going about it the right way and losing with grace...not always a common feature at step 5! Kudos to the Woodbridge stand-in goalkeeper (Glyn Dixon, their goalkeeping coach) and their number 6 Kris Rose for engaging and playing along with the Fenmen faithful.
A trip to Harleston in the next round gives the Fenmen a chance to gain revenge for last season's penalty shootout defeat in the same competition.
Good luck to the 'Peckers for the rest of the season. Next for the Fenmen Skegness on Tuesday at home....see you there!
