The opening league game of the United Counties League Premier Division North saw Wisbech travel to newly promoted Hucknall Town.
The game, a 5pm kick off, was part of the UCL ground hop weekend and saw 688 people through the turnstiles.
The first 20 minutes was a scrappy affair with both sides trying to find their rhythm. The home side having the better of the opening spell. For Wisbech both Sisa and Amir were causing the home defence some problems. However, it was Rob Conyard who caused the biggest problem on 23 minutes. As Rob raced into the penalty area the Hucknall keeper rushed out to the right side of his 18 yard area, Rob tumbled to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot.
Rob dusted himself down and dispatched the ball into the net to give The Fenmen the lead 1-0, which is how the half ended.
Wisbech had much the better of the second half, both in terms of possession and territory. A combination of bad luck, good goalkeeping and last ditch defending stopped the visitor’s grabbing a second goal.
Amir, not surprisingly as he’d not featured in preseason due to injury, was replaced with 20 minutes to go by league debutant Matteo Perkins.
The home side got their equaliser following a rare second half attack when former fenman Nathan Kelly was fed the ball from the right and put the ball past Charlie Congreve.
The goal made for an interesting final 15 minutes, Wisbech having to soak up some pressure from the home side whilst also continuing to attack when they could to find the winning goal.
However, neither team added to their tally and the game finished 1-1.
It was a good all round team performance, every player put in a good shift and worked hard for each other. New signing Lee Briggs had a commanding game in defence but it was Danny Brooks who was chosen as player of the match.
