After the highs of last week we saw the lows at Fountain Fresh Park this afternoon.
The Fenmen were poor, very poor. Awful would not be too strong a word. To cap a miserable afternoon Danny Brooks, hero of last week’s cup win against March, was sent off in added on time and will miss next week’s FA Cup tie.
Wisbech were second best from the start despite playing with a strong wind blowing down the pitch. The visitors from Leicestershire, newly promoted this season, were first to virtually every ball and might have been three goals ahead at the interval.
Ashby took the lead after 24 minutes when Will Robson and Danny Quinn combined in the box and Robson’s shot from the right went in off the post. The move was started by a ball over the top from Ash Garner, who was the best player on the field.
Wisbech, who replaced Sisa Tuntulwana with Archie Wallace at half time, at least started the second half on the front foot, with Amir Ward posing a threat on the left.
But Ashby looked dangerous every time they broke and it was no surprise after 73 minutes when Sam Grouse went on a driving run down the left and his cross was bundled over the line by Brooks.
The Fenmen made several changes but it made little difference as they slumped to their first defeat of the season. A two-goal margin of defeat flattered the home side.
Things went from bad to worse when Brooks hacked down Grouse as he burst through and received a red card.
The Fenmen will have to up their performance by a large margin if they are to have any chance against Biggleswade Town in the FA Cup next Saturday.
