The Fenmen simply blew top-of-the-table Belper United away at Fountain Fresh Park this afternoon.
They were superb from the start. It was the best performance I have seen from a Wisbech side for some years,
Toby Allen was man-of-the-match for his second-half hat-trick but the award could have gone to almost anyone. From goalkeeper to number 11, plus the subs, they were magnificent.
Interim manager Alex Street has worked wonders in his three matches in charge. He has asked his players to play with freedom and they have got the message.
Sisa Tuntulwana was virtually unplayable in the first half, leading the Belper defence a merry dance, but it was his long throw-ins which led to the first two goals.
Wisbech might have already scored twice when Sisa’s throw-in from the left was handled in the area and Sam Murphy stepped up to slot home his second spot kick of the season after nine minutes.
Another long throw caused mayhem in the Belper defence and new captain Max Mattless was on hand to make it 2-0.
The Fenmen also hit the inside of the post and the bar in the first half and it is no exaggeration to say they might have been five or six up at the break.
At the other end Charlie Congreve made a couple of vital saves as the visitors tried to hit back.
After the break it was the Toby Allen show. His first goal came after a good interception by Aaron Hart, the second was a towering head at the far post and he completed his hat-trick from close range. Who was the last local player to score a hat-trick for the Fenmen? Possibly Bill Smith?
Wisbech played some delightful football on the floor with slick man-to-man passing. When they lofted the ball it was mainly to set the front players or wing backs free.
A great performance. Let’s hope for more of the same at home to Sleaford on Tuesday.
Wisbech: Congreve, Tuntulwana, Ward, Briggs, Mattless (c), Hall, Allen, Murphy, Assombalonga, Kacirek, Hart. Subs used: Wilson, Conyard, Wallace, Glusco. Unused: Street.
