The Fenmen’s recent bubble burst against league leaders Sherwood Colliery at Fountain Fresh Park this afternoon.
Wisbech were second best against a side who are unbeaten in the league and are probably favourites to win the title.
The home side began reasonably well but Sherwood soon made their slick passing movements count and exploited space on the wings. New goalkeeper Dan George, who had an excellent game, made a fine early save but he had no chance when the visitors took the lead after 19 minutes, Ethan Wiesztort heading home from Grant’s cross.
Wisbech missed a decent chance from a breakaway which might have made all the difference. Instead, Sherwood continued to hold the upper hand and Keenan Hall unfortunately found his own goal from another cross. Sherwood also struck the bar with a powerful effort.
It was 3-0 shortly before half time when vastly experienced striker Craig Westcarr was put through and slipped the ball past George. But the goal came following what looked like a foul which was not given by the referee, who did not have the best of games.
Wisbech fought hard after the break and should be commended for trying to play football on the ground rather than resorting to the long ball, although their efforts came to nothing.
Sherwood continued to look very comfortable and in Jamie York had the man of the match. Ex-Fenman Bill Feary said he was the best player he had seen at the ground for several years.
Jake Miller, who is on dual registration from Downham Market, came on in the second half and performed well.
A defeat for Wisbech but they will not face many better teams this season.
