The Fenmen renew rivalries with near neighbours Deeping Rangers when the teams meet at Fountain Fresh Park on Boxing Day.
Deeping are mid-table in the League having collected 27 points from their 17 matches, with seven wins and five defeats. They suffered a shock 3-1 reverse at home to Pinchbeck on Saturday, a result which moves the visitors off the bottom of the table. Wisbech travel to Spalding to face Pinchbeck on Saturday. Deepng’s leading scorer is Tom Waumsley with 10 goals.
For Wisbech, Sam Murphy and goalkeeper Dan George will be playing against one of their former clubs. Deeping manager Luke Hipwell is another link between the clubs, having spent several productive seasons at Fountain Fresh Park.
The last time the teams met at the end of last season was a seven-goal thriller with the Fenmen recording a 4-3 victory.
Club History:
Rangers, formed in 1964, finished runners-up in the Peterborough League Division One in 1985 and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1995/96 they were runners-up in the Premier Division, and again in 1998/99, under the management of Mel Landin. This earned the club promotion to the United Counties League, where they have remained.
Deeping developed a reputation for finding and developing excellent young players. The most notable were Malcolm Christie, who moved to Derby County and then Middlesbrough, and Ben Wright, who played for Viking Stavanger in the UEFA Cup and was also on the books of Lincoln City.
In their debut season in the UCL, Rangers almost pulled off a promotion double, narrowly missing out on the runners-up spot in the final game of the 1999/2000 season. That year saw the installation of floodlights at their Outgang Road ground which made the club eligible to enter more cup competitions.
In 2000/01 manager Chris Beckett took Rangers into the Premier Division by finishing Division One runners-up. Rangers made their FA Vase debut in 2001/02 and the following year made their first appearance in the FA Cup.
The club had a succession of managers in the following seasons and mixed fortunes on the pitch. However, for the start of the 2006/07 season they appointed former Wisbech Town player Tuncay Korkmaz as manager. The club won two rounds in the FA Cup and set a league record by going 28 matches unbeaten, a run ended by Yaxley. But Rangers went on to win the Premier Division championship for the first time and Korkmaz was named manager of the year
Deeping have the stated ambition to win the Premier Division title again and move to Step 4 for the first time
