Someone once said it's a funny old game, and that proved to be the case at Fountain Fresh Park this afternoon.
Visitors Newark & Sherwood dominated play for the first 25 minutes and should have taken the lead, but the Fenmen struck twice in five minutes to turn the match on its head.
The first goal, after 27 minutes, was a spectacular effort from 40-plus yards by leading scorer Toby Allen, who connected with the ball which looped over the visiting goalkeeper for his 21st goal of the season.
Five minutes later a corner on the right was turned in at the far post by man-of-the-match Harry Twite, his first goal for the club.
After these setbacks Newark continued to hold the upper hand and it was only excellent saves by Dan George which kept the visitors at bay.
But in first-half stoppage time Newark reduced the arrears from the spot after a foul in the area. The visitors might have wondered how they managed to be behind at the interval, but they have a poor record in front of goal and their shooting was off target.
The second half saw Wisbech mostly on the defensive but, with Twite outstanding, they managed to hold out and George made more important saves.
There was a controversial moment midway through the half when Ethan Wilson was clearly elbowed in the face, but the referee deemed it a yellow card after a discussion with the linesman.
Wisbech can consider themselves somewhat fortunate, but at the end of the day it's the three points that count.
Wisbech: George, Reed, Wren, Twite, Mattless (c), Wilson, Ward, O Williams, Allen, Challinor, A Williams. Subs used: Kacirek, Murkin, Howe, Roberts.
MoM: Harry Twite.
