The Fenmen will be looking to continue their improved form when they travel to meet Newark & Sherwood United on Saturday.
The Nottinghamshire club have languished near the foot of the UCL Premier Division North table for much of the season, but a superb recent run has seen them shoot up the league.
Victory at Ashby Ivanhoe on Wednesday was their sixth in seven matches. In fact their last defeat was at Fountain Fresh Park early last month when goals from Toby Allen and Harry Twite gave Wisbech a 2-1 victory.
Club History:
Founded in 1901 as A.J. Simpson and Co, the club began life in the Newark Ironmongers’ League. No records survive from those early days, but it is known that in 1935 the club, now renamed Worthington Simpson, entered the Nottingham Spartan League.
After winning back-to-back titles, Simmo’s joined the Notts Alliance League in 1949, going on to win that title in 1953 and 1966.
Name changes followed in the late 1990s, first to IDP and then to Newark Flowserve, and in 2004 the club entered the Central Midlands League Premier Division.
Following a short break, the first team reformed in 2013 and finished third in Notts
Senior League Division Two, securing promotion. Another successful campaign followed a year later when the team finished runners-up and clinched their place in the Premier Division (Step 7). The Highwaymen won the NSL Premier Division and league cup double, finishing 25 points clear at the top.
Season 2018/19 saw the club playing Step 6 football in the East Midlands Counties League where they finished second and were promoted to the Midland Football League.
In May 2020 the club dropped the Flowserve and became Newark FC.
With the factory closed it was inevitable the club’s famous old ground would be lost and the 2021/22 season found them ground sharing at Basford United in the United Counties League.
Another change of name followed, to Newark & Sherwood United, and the club have moved to Collingham’s Station Road ground until state-of-the-art facilities are built in the town.
