Wisbech Town collected a well-earned point on Tuesday night following a dogged and determined defensive performance against hosts hotly tipped to win the league.
Blazing sunshine welcomed the fixture in a good old ground that would not be out of place at an England away game in a municipal stadium in a former Eastern Bloc country you'd never heard of before the draw was made. Ironic when you think about it as Grantham's most famous political export bought about the hard stop to public ownership in the UK.
The first half was largely devoid of any real quality as both sides struggled with both the weather and javelin/discuss pitted playing surface. Rob Conyard had the best chance for the Fenmen with a break but could not finish or find the right pass through to Bennett in the box.
The boisterous home support became expectant, in truth they probably expected and easier evening at the office. Increased pressure on the officials and the Wisbech backline led to a last minute penalty at the end of the first half that was duly converted.
The second half continued in much the same vein but the hosts continued to be thwarted. Half time sub Falco and Ward saw increasing amounts of the ball as Town always looked dangerous on the break. A series of corners midway through the second half increased the pressure on the hosts. On 59 minutes captain Max Mattless turned home a ping-ponging ball inside the Grantham area with Rob Conyard claiming the assist.
The last 30 minutes resembled the Alamo for the Fenmen as the hosts pushed for the win they expected. Town stood firm including a last minute wonder save from keeper Aaron Watson. On the final whistle it was the travelling 20 or so from the Fens who were happier with the result... Now on to Grantham's near neighbours Harrowby on Saturday at Fountain Fresh Park, kick off 3pm.
